Understanding of health policy and political processes is a major component in the professional
nurses role. For this assignment, the student will identify a current HealthCare Legislative Bill
from one of the following categories:

Rural Healthcare – Safe staffing
BSN nurses verses ADN nurses – (staffing ratios, outcomes, funding)
Nurse Licensure Compact
Certified Medication Aids
Legal ramifications of verbal and physical assaults of health care workers
*Your paper must be related to one of the topics listed above or you will receive a grade of
“0”. If you have a question about the applicability of the Bill you choose, please check with
faculty.
Include the following items in your paper:
Title page (see the example on the assignment page)
Headings per APA (All headings are in bold print)
Heading #1: Should be the title of your paper that is listed on the Title Page (bold print and
centered).
Your first paragraph following heading #1 should include your introduction with a clearly
written purpose statement.
Heading #2: Legislation and Health Policy Development (bold print and centered).
This paragraph should introduce how policy is developed and how nurses can participate in this
process.
Heading #3: Legislative Bill - include the number or the title of your bill – (bold print and
centered).
This paragraph should include a brief description of the bill. Clearly state your support or
opposition to this bill. Discuss 2 reasons for supporting or opposing this bill. You should have a
reference for this section of your paper.
Heading #3: Purpose of Bill (bold print and centered).
Discuss the purpose of the bill to include:
Statistics (national, regional, state) concerning who is impacted and why. How will this bill
impact healthcare and nurses’? Who submitted the bill and where is it in the process (has it been
voted as a bill, or it is currently in the house or senate)
Heading #4: Conclusion (centered and in bold print) – your conclusion should be written
including all of the elements of APA style.
References
Your references should be on a separate page with - References – (centered and in bold print).
This assignment requires four references (there will be 1 point deducted if you use less than four
or more than four). One reference should be your required textbook (Cherry & Jacobs). One
reference should be the bill itself and you can choose 2 additional peer reviewed resources.
References must be cited in the body of the paper. Your references should be current (within the
last five years).
Using the APA 7 th edition Common reference Examples Guide (can be found in the APA
resources in the modules section) or the 7 th edition APA manual, identify the type of reference
you are using and list it in red beneath your reference on the reference list. Do this for each of
your four references. If you cannot find the format for the reference you have chosen, do not use
the reference.

Authored Book (Section 10.2)
This paper should be a minimum of 1200 words/maximum of 1450 words.
The paper is graded on scholarly content (see rubric) which is inclusive of sentence & paragraph
structure/topic development/logical progression in addition to correct grammar and punctuation which is graded separately.
